Why Mindset Matters

Your mindset plays a critical role in how you cope with life's challenges. Individuals who believe their talents and abilities can be developed (through hard work, good strategies, persistence) have a growth mindset. They tend to achieve more than those with a more fixed mindset (those who believe their abilities, intelligence, talents are fixed traits). This is because they put more energy into learning, developing, and growing.

When someone embraces a growth mindset, they feel far more empowered and committed. It’s critical to reward not just effort but learning and progress, and to emphasize the processes that yield these things, such as seeking help from others, trying new strategies, and capitalizing on setbacks to move forward effectively.

It’s not easy to attain a growth mindset. When we face challenges, receive criticism, or fare poorly compared with others, we can easily fall into insecurity or defensiveness, a response that inhibits growth. To remain in a growth zone, we must identify and work with these triggers.

It’s hard work, but individuals can gain a lot by deepening their understanding of growth-mindset concepts and the processes for putting them into practice. It gives them a richer sense of who they are, what they stand for, and how they want to move forward.

How can we become more conscious of the mindsets we are living? A practice of mindfulness helps us become more aware of how our mindsets are manifesting in our lives and our world.

Having a growth mindset doesn't involve believing that anyone can become anything they want with enough education and effort. Not everyone can become Einstein or Mozart just because they try. Instead, the growth mindset is about living up to one's possible potential. Who knows how far a person can go if they set their mind to it?

People with a growth mindset believe that the effort that goes into learning and deepening one's understanding and abilities is well worth the trouble. By focusing on the process rather than the outcome, people will understand that their efforts, hard work, and dedication can lead to change, learning, and growth both now and in the future.
