Get to know us
We believe that physical and mental health is important at any age. We start with the breath because it is the foundation upon which all other practices are built. No matter how young or strong you are, how well you eat or how much time you spend exercising, none of it matters if you're not breathing properly.
Life in general is getting more stressful. This has huge effects on our immune, gastrointestinal and sleep systems, as well as how we feel about ourselves and the world around us, increasing the chances that we will suffer – be that from illnesses such as heart disease, high blood pressure, obesity, diabetes or mental breakdown. Indeed, one of the major hallmarks of modern life is the high prevalence of psychiatric disorders as consequence of chronic exposure to stress.
We have more complicated lives than we did even 10 years ago. Pressures from work, family, relationships, finances & health accumulate quickly. Add to that the fact that we're always connected through our phones and other devices. It's becoming harder to unplug and just sit still in silence. Even the idea of being without your phone for a few moments is enough to cause a stress response for some. Now more than ever, we need to take time to check in with ourselves, to feel connected in both mind & body, to shift ourselves away from autopilot and be present in this moment. After all, this moment is all that we ever have.
About Colin Butts
Certified Oxygen Advantage® Trainer and 4 Elements Founder
Everything begins with the breath. Whether we are conscious of it or not, our breathing determines our state of mind and in turn our state of mind determines our breathing. With a history of years spent fighting depression, anxiety and panic attacks, I have firsthand knowledge of the power of the breath and its effects on mental health.
After a friend recommended Patrick McKeown’s book The Oxygen Advantage®, I read, re-read and started implementing the techniques and exercises into my own daily life and workouts and found positive results both physically and mentally. I was surprised that I had never heard of the benefits of nasal breathing before. I value this knowledge so much that I want to spread the word and help people from all walks of life start to observe their breathing patterns and guide them towards utilizing their breath for improved mental health and physical performance.
With easy access to the Rocky Mountains and several national parks, I love hiking, biking, skiing and exploring in the mountains. In my daily life I practice meditation, mindfulness, yoga as well as cardio and weight training. Each of these activities help keep my mind and body active and are much more enjoyable since I learned how to breathe properly! I now have more energy and improved performance.
I am willing to teach and help anyone with an open mind and a desire to be better. Whether it is dealing with anxiety/stress, concentration/focus, general health or athletic performance, I want to demonstrate how a few simple breathing techniques can help change lives.
I live in Calgary, Alberta, Canada. I am available for individual and group online training. I can be reached by email for a free consultation.
